The Beginning

A beacon of hope for destitute girl children and women, SMSS Hindu Mahila Mandiram was founded by Smt. K. Chinnamma, Inspector of schools in the former Travancore State. Moved by the plight of the abandoned, uncared and underprivileged girl child, she visualised an institution that would work for their welfare.

It was a long and arduous road. But finally, the Mahila Mandiram became a reality in 1920. The land was gifted by His Highness Sreemoolam Tirunal, the then Maharaja of Travancore. Money from public donations was used to construct the buildings. As a tribute to his generosity, Mahila Mandiram was inaugurated in Thiruvananthapuram on the Maharaja’s 60th birthday.

Today, the Mahila Mandiram is well acknowledged for the stellar role it has played in bringing relief and succor to hundreds of hapless girls and women in South India especially Kerala. In 2012, the institution won the National Award for Child Care.
