The Care Center is at Azhoor, 35 kilometres from Trivandrum. It was established in 2002 after the land and heritage building were donated by a benefactor. With the space proving to be inadequate over time, the centre was expanded under the project, Ammakayi (for mothers). A new, bigger and old age-friendly facility was inaugurated on February 15, 2019.
Twenty elderly women between 60 and 93 years of age live at the home. Four of them had been abandoned at a Government hospital by their relatives. Residents who are able to, are encouraged to help in the daily chores of the home. They also maintain a vegetable and flower garden.
A warden, cook, nurse, caregiver and sanitary worker look after their daily needs. The expenses are met through sponsorship and public participation. The Social Justice Department of the State Government gives a small grant.
The physical health of the residents is taken care of by a visiting doctor and paramedics. Treatment is also available at a government hospital 4 km away, and medicines are provided by well-wishers. The Inner Wheel Club of Trivandrum conducts health camps regularly at the centre. The next phase will include day-care activities for the elderly and outreach programs.
